A Speech Therapist is a professional responsible for the prevention, assessment, treatment and scientific study of human communication and related problems.

In this context, human communication involves all processes associated with the production and comprehension of oral language.

Signs of Alarm in Adults

-Needs support from other people to communicate

-Presents little structured speech

-Presents difficulties in naming objects

-Shows difficulty in understanding what is told

- Displays difficulty in reading letters or words

- Has persistent hoarse voice for 2  weeks in a row

- Often has “no voice”

- Has a foreign body sensation in the throat

- Has difficulty in swallowing normally

- Chokes frequently with liquid or solids

Signs of Alarm in Children

- Struggles to express themselves

- Presents an unclear and disorganized speech

- Has difficulty in understanding simple instructions

-- His/her voice is often hoarse 

- Replaces one sound with another frequently (eg chair produces tair; soup produces thoup)

- Omits the-r sound after 6 years (eg, produces tea instead of tree)

- Repeats syllables and sounds with frequency (eg,  fro… fro… frog... kni ...kni… knife)

- Repeats words often (eg: I ... I ... I liked a lot)
